What is the Isis Operation?
In Juniper Crescent, Oksanya receives the fictional operation nicknamed the Isis Operation, which has the capacity to cure many genetic disorders as well as some forms of cancer, but what exactly does it do?
The operation starts by creating a retrovirus. This synthetic cell acts like a virus, only this time it’s helping us. In real life, we use retroviruses to create synthetic insulin for diabetics. Through a blood transfusion, the retrovirus is inserted into the patient, where it attaches to cells and plug in the new genetic material. It’s going to run through every cell for a month, during which time, the patient must be in quarantine, otherwise the retrovirus could spread to people who didn’t sign up for the operation. While there,
While the retrovirus is doing its work, the patient will also undergo a brain operation to let the brain know where to find the new genetic material. Think of it like a library. The retrovirus is putting some new books in, and the librarian needs to update their system to accommodate the books being added.

After the brain operation and the insertion of the retrovirus, if the patient optioned for augmentations, such as ears, eyes, teeth, tails, scales, tongues, or wings, then the doctors go ahead and prepare the patient to receive those additions. To prevent the retrovirus from spreading to people who haven’t had the operation, the patient will need to be in quarantine for three weeks to a month.
